Thailand and Lao PDR Strengthen Cooperation to Celebrate 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations with a Media Caravan Tour

On March 14, 2025, Mr. Paopoom Rojanasakul, Deputy Minister of Finance, and Mr. Perames Vudthitornetiraks, President of the Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (NEDA) (Public Organization), held a bilateral discussion with Mr. Phouvong Kittavong, Deputy Minister of Finance of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), at Le Thatluang Hotel, Vientiane.

This meeting was convened to enhance Thailand-Lao PDR cooperation in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations and served as a platform for discussing the development of key projects between the two countries. Topics included infrastructure connectivity, financial and fiscal cooperation, and international trade. Additionally, the meeting aimed to raise awareness of international development initiatives and strengthen relations through media networks under the Thailand-Lao PDR Media Caravan Tour organized by NEDA.

During the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Finance highlighted the importance of infrastructure development and connectivity to support the expansion of economic, financial, and international trade activities. Thailand is currently in the process of drafting the Financial Business Hub Act (Fin Hub) and developing a Cross-Border QR Payment System, linking Thailand's National ITMX (NITMX) with Lao PDR's Lao National Payment Network (LAPNet). This initiative aims to facilitate seamless cross-border payments. Thailand also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Lao PDR’s financial system development through knowledge transfer and technical cooperation. In terms of international trade cooperation, both sides agreed to promote industrial and agricultural trade, particularly in pickup trucks, as demand for such vehicles continues to rise in Lao PDR. This collaboration will reduce trade barriers, enhance customs facilitation, and ensure smoother and more efficient border trade.

Mr. Perames Vudthitornetiraks, President of NEDA, also provided an update on ongoing cooperation projects between Thailand and Lao PDR, as well as plans for future expansion. Key areas of focus include infrastructure, finance, energy, and economic and social development. Notable initiatives include:

  • Development of Clean Energy Infrastructure ("Go Green") to minimize environmental impact and strengthen regional energy security.
  • Advancing cooperation in digital and financial technology to foster innovation and economic growth.
  • Expanding training programs and capacity-building initiatives for Lao PDR’s workforce to
    promote sustainable economic development.

These efforts will enable Thailand and Lao PDR to achieve long-term economic sustainability, create new trade opportunities, and further strengthen bilateral ties for a more integrated and prosperous future.
