On August 18, 2026, Mr. Kirati Veruwan, Vice President of the Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (Public Organization) (NEDA), and the NEDA delegation joined Mr. Phitsaphonh Philavong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Roads, Ministry of Public Works and Transport of The Lao People's Democratic Republic, and his delegation, along with representatives of the Ministry of Finance of The Lao People's Democratic Republic, representatives of the Public Works and Transport Department of Kham Muan sub-district, project supervision consultants, and contractors for both contracts under the Route No. 12 (R12) Improvement Project on the Thakhek to Na Phao border checkpoint in Laos, for a meeting to review project progress.
The meeting discussed operational problems and obstacles during the rainy season, engineering issues, detailed design, and requests for Variation Orders (VO) arising from Field Estimation and on-site assessments. Participants also discussed the impact of adjustments in the prices of goods and services resulting from rising fuel costs due to the global geopolitical situation, including the conflict involving Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States, and Israel, as well as the import of fuel for use in the project. The meeting considered solutions to these issues to ensure that the project can be completed according to its objectives within the 30-month construction contract period and the approved project budget. The meeting was held at the Public Works and Transport Department of Kham Muan sub-district in Laos.
